I'm back

Well these past couple of days have been a complete mess! After receiving 3 inches of rain on Monday our already muddy barnyard is now like mud soup so as a result we have been spreading straw bales out like nobodies business. I did manage to get a couple of calves clipped and pictured and they look great.

Sunny Valley Renee 29R

This PB simmental donor cow was purchased from the Shologan Farms dispersal last March. She is sired by LFE Red Nevada, a foundation red bull for the Sunny Valley program and her three latest maternal siblings to sell have averaged nearly $6000! This cow has a gorgeous udder and this year she has a monster LBR Crockett bull calf at side.

Kinda Windy

We've had a fair amount of wind blowing today. It was enough to blow a few trees onto fences, which means
more fixing fence, it even flipped a wooden calf shelter! Luckily no calves were inside. I included a few pics of the damage.

Tis the season

Well its that time of the year again...the summer show season! While the shows are always fun, getting there can be quite a chore. 5:30 mornings day after day and big electric bill are just some of the things I'm not excited about. Alot of my time during the summer is spent training and growing hair on all my show animals. By putting that extra time in and keeping the hair on my cattle throughout the summer months it could possibly give me a competitive advantage.

So my mornings usually start each day at 5:30 am. First off I rinse the showstring off with cold water until their hide is cold. Then comb all the hair straight down, then straight forward and then at a 45 degree up and forward. Once I'm done that then they are blown dry, as soon as they are dry I spray some final bloom on them, blow it out and throw the steers in the cool room and the females under fans and a mister. This is repeated at least one more time, often two more times, everyday, weekends included!

Sometimes being competitive just isn't good enough!

Show Heifer?...I think so!

Da Vinci couldn't have painted a better front end on this complete outcross purebred horned hereford heifer calf. She is an early candidate to lead our showstring at next summer's World Hereford Conference in Calgary!

King of the hill

Guess she wanted a better view!

January % Simm

This halfblood simmental heifer is really coming on lately. She is extremely hairy and extended through front 1/3! Watch for her throughout the summer, she will be competetive in the % heifer class. Below is another picture of her at only three weeks old.

Today's Activities

Today I am fixing fence! Yay...not! Its not the most exciting thing to do especially on a hot day, you can bet i will have a real good start on my farmer's tan by the end of the day. lol However the cows are getting stranded in the mud in the calving grounds and they have to get out and onto some grass. With all the snow we got this year the grass is growing extremely well.
As for the tools I use my fencing pliers, pictured above, are the most important object I carry around. Mine has been around the block a few times, about 25 years, has been lost a few times, but still worked better than any other pair that we have purchased in the recent years. Just another case where they don't make things like they used to!

Halter Breaking 101

Rule #1: Don't wait until a cow is 9 yrs old to start halter breaking her, she won't like it!

So as you may have taken from that I started to break a 9 yr old  cow today. This cow is lookin pretty phenomenol at the moment and she has a real pretty heifer calf a side, she is also one of my donor  cows( a cow used is embryo transfer ). Last week a decided I was gonna try at take her out to some junior shows this summer mainly to kick some but, also to see if I could actually get the job done!

This morning i figured it was finally dry enough to start the process. I made a small pen in front of the squeeze chute so she couldn't run to far when i let her out. finally I threw a halter on a opened the head gate expecting her to come out like a bullet! well she didn't go flying out of the chute, in fact she she didn't come out at all. it took about five minutes to finally walk out the headgate, then the fun really began! for fifteen minutes straight she ran aound the perimeter of the pen, with me at the end of the rope trailing behind her. let me tell you it aint easy holding on to a 1900 lb cow that has no respect for a thin piece of rope around her head. once she quit circling she was actually really good. within half an hour i was combing her off without her even being tied up or kicking me. ( I'm kinda prone to taking hooves to the shins) After having the halter on her for a couple of hours i figured that was enough for a day and let her go. Now i just have to do this everyday for the next couple of months to ensure she will be safe for town.
Broccoli, soon to be show cow!

Joining the Revolution

A blog has been a thought of mine for a while now. I was going to wait a month or two but things kinda got rushed for Summer Synergy. For the Marketing project at this year's junior show we have to create a blog to encourage agriculture education. So if anyone has any questions or suggestions, fire away!
